What does WaterAid do in India?

What does WaterAid do in India: Around 9 percent of the country’s total population is still deprived of safe and clean drinking water and 54 percent of the country’s total population doesn’t have proper and hygienic sanitation facilities. This not only violates the right to have safe drinking water but also leads to the spread of various waterborne diseases like cholera, diarrhea, etc. To deal with such an important issue, WaterAid India has taken several steps to provide basic facilities like clean drinking water and hygienic sanitation to people who still lack these necessities.

Established in 1981, WaterAid India is committed to providing safe drinking water and better sanitation and hygiene facilities. WaterAid India is an NGO operating in different cities of 13 Indian states that run different campaigns and awareness programs to teach people about the significance of WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene). Let’s read more about What does WaterAid do in India and how is the organization working in the direction of bringing positive impacts in the lives of people who are facing challenges to access these resources.

What does WaterAid do in India?

The role of WaterAid India is very dynamic as it is working with multiple themes synchronised with WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene). WaterAid along with the government ensure that a proper supply of safe drinking water along with better and hygienic sanitation facilities and places are available to every person in the country. Several projects of WaterAid India have helped people from urban and rural areas to access these resources.

The different themes of WaterAid India are as follows:

1. WaterAid India- Drinking water security

Under this theme, WaterAid India is working to provide clean drinking water to people who don’t have any facility to access clean water for drinking. People who drink dirty water are more prone to deadly diseases like diarrhea, typhoid, etc. To ensure the safety of these people from illness and other issues caused by dirty drinking water, WaterAid India and the government of different states are working together to provide drinking water security.

2. Urban WASH

This theme of WaterAid India ensures that people living in urban areas of the country should have safe WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) facilities in order to live a healthy and disease-free life. Various programs are organised at different places to keep people taught about the concept and significance of Urban WASH.

3. School WASH

To teach the students of different schools and institutions about the concept of WASH, WaterAid India started a program named School WASH. Under this, WaterAid India conducts awareness events at different Schools and institutions to tell students about safe drinking water, decent sanitation, and hygiene. WaterAid India is assisted by the Department Of Education in the School WASH program to bring awareness among all school-going children.

4. Rural Sanitation

Open sanitation practices are still so common in rural India. People living in such rural areas are vulnerable to diseases and health issues due to the contamination spread through open sanitation. To teach people about the importance of decent and hygienic sanitation practices and building community toilets and sanitation places in rural areas, WaterAid India is working round the clock.

5. Wash in health and nutrition

This theme of WaterAid India deals with the importance of WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) in health and nutrition. WaterAid India ensures that people are getting safe drinking water which provides different nutritional supplements to them.

Apart from this, the organization also keeps a check on all the issues like open sanitation, unhygienic sanitation facilities, open defecation, etc, and tackles them accordingly to provide a healthy environment for all the people. Proper coordination between the health department and WaterAid India makes it possible to make people of both urban and rural areas aware of WASH in health and nutrition.
