In Nelamangala (Karnataka), Palakkad (Kerala) and Sri City (Andhra Pradesh), world environment day was observed to create awareness amongst the community members based on this years’ theme – Beat Plastic Pollution. The activities at each community focussed on conservation and protection of the environment.
Rallies, orientation sessions, planting saplings, and drawing competitions were organised in the communities and schools. These events were attended by the Gram Panchayat (village assembly), block level officials, youth groups, health department officials as well as frontline workers. The participants also took a vow to minimize the use of plastic in their daily use. Apart from the theme, messages on the importance of water conservation, nature conservation, participatory water management, promoting tree planting and rainwater harvesting were also discussed. Through traditional songs and plays, the importance of safe hygiene practices that keep the community healthy was also performed.
In Jharkhand, the day was marked with various activities at Ranishwer block in Dumka district. The day began with a rally by students and teachers to raise awareness on the environment – especially conservation of water. Later a meeting was organised and also plantation was done by students, teachers, and community.
