Eight Gram Panchayats in Datia become ODF

WaterAid India

Eight gram panchayats (GP) and eight villages in Datia have been declared open defecation free (ODF) on March 30. Datia has one of the lowest sanitation coverage in the state and so WaterAid India prioritised its intervention in the district in collaboration with our partner Parhit. We influenced the district administration and Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) team and identified panchayats which can be motivated to be ODF.

WaterAid facilitated training of motivators on Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and an action plan with timeline was chalked out for each panchayat. In addition to the different phases of CLTS such as pre-triggering, triggering and post triggering, night meetings (ratri chaupals), community meetings, household visits were also conducted by the district administration including Zila Panchayat CEO, District Coordinators and Block Coordinators and our partner.

To ensure toilet usage, leaders in each panchayat were identified and monitoring committees formed. Intensive morning follow-ups undertaken by these monitoring committees played a crucial role in ensuring 100 per cent usage of toilets. Focus was given to ODF from the beginning instead of saturation approach. Communities were encouraged to take collective decisions and emphasis was on usage of toilets by all community members. One round of verification has been done by the district administration and our partner. Final verification will be done by the state with the support from WaterAid in last week of April.
